Commentary on Luke 9:28-36 [37-43] The transfiguration of Jesus follows immediately on the scene where Peter confesses Jesus to be the Christ, the Messiah (Luke 9:20). Commentators have long pointed out that Moses represented the Sinai Covenant/Law (as well as the Exodus) and that Elijah represented the prophetic voice of the Old Testament as well as Gods covenant faithfulness in sending servants to continue speaking to and ministering to even a wayward Israel. Throughout this chapter, the question has been, Who is this? Now God provides the answer. to prayfor the period He had now reached was a critical and anxious one. The cloud was the symbol of the presence of God at Sinai (Exodus 24:15-16; 34:5), and it symbolizes Gods presence for these three disciples. they saw his glory and heard the voice of God. saves me time (retirement is just as busy as full time ministry) saves me money..(how quickly our libraries are dated!). Though sinless, Jesus experienced pressures and grief and sorrow. So it is possible that this little detail on the timing of the Transfiguration could be a hint pointing toward Easter and the glory that awaited Jesus also then. Jesus exodon leads us into the kingdom of God. The tradition that this mountain was Tabor is generally abandoned, and Mount Hermon is commonly supposed to have been the scene of the transfiguration. How many broken hearts and broken lives could be avoided if we would just listen to him! Why should they have problems with this demon? The Jewish people expect Moses and Elijah to return to usher in the messianic era. Lectionary Reflections Luke 9:28-36 February 10, 2013. What we are about to read is an unusual story. This mountain is not named, but its name is not important. He is beyond us and greater than us in every way imaginable. At the base of the mountain, they find themselves confronted by a great crowd and a distraught father who pleads for his son, who is possessed by a demon. More importantly, it marked a renewal of Gods covenant with Israel. Ive seen the Lord! 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Moses came to set the people of Israel free from slavery in Egypt. daystar in my heart appear., Visit, then, this soul of mine; Perhaps he is also tying it to the Feast of Tabernacles, where the Israelites present offerings for seven days and then have a holy convocation on the eighth day (Leviticus 23:36). Those who are wise shall shine as the brightness of the expanse; It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. All that Peter taught and wrote about for more than 3 decades was founded upon eyewitness experiences he and the other apostles had. Jesus words echo Moses reproach of Israel, and provide one more link between Moses and Jesus (Deuteronomy 32:5see also Numbers 14:27; Isaiah 65:2). We dont die and then simply vanish. 29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. See Mark 9:14-29 and Matthew 17:14-20 for parallels. God the Father and his Son and even the angels have a glory about them. They are not really tracking all of what Jesus is saying, and so when Jesus speaks openly about his impending death, the disciples sometimes say nothing at all (note what happens after Luke 9:27: we fast-forward 8 whole days with no reported reactions whatsoever of the disciples to what Jesus had said). However it all happened, Luke alone tells us that these two showed up to encourage Jesus, to remind him that they, too, along with all the hosts of heaven were gearing up for the fulfillment of everything God had been aiming to accomplish ever since sin and evil showed up in this creation to sully Gods good intentions. For Moses died 1400 years earlier, and Elijah was taken into heaven 800 years earlier, and here they are now in front of Peter, James, and John alive and in glory. He was not making up stories about Christ. In his prayerful agony, as he felt the weight of his impending suffering on the Cross, Jesus sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Thirty years later, Peter wrote with words of awe about this day on the mountain. As Moses led the Israelites in the wilderness, God told him to build booths in which the people would dwell for seven days (Leviticus 23:33-43). Moses and Elijah, who were leaving Jesus prior to the voice from the cloud (v. 33), are gone. Jesus has just announced to the disciples that he must (Greek: deiimplying the will of God) suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up (v. 22). From the very beginning there has been nothing about the appearance of Jesus that would cause you to think that he was anything more than just another boy, the son of a carpenter. Along its mighty forest-avenues, until the grass grew fair with the mountain lilies, his feet dashed in the dew of Hermon, he must have gone to pray his first recorded prayer about death, and from the steep of it, before he knelt, could see to the south all the dwelling-place of the people that had sat in darkness, and seen the great light - the land of Zabulon and of Naphtali, Galilee of the nations; could see, even with his human sight, the gleam of that lake by Capernaum and Chorazin, and many a place loved by him and vainly ministered to, whose house was now left unto them desolate; and, chief of all, far in the utmost blue, the hills above Nazareth, sloping down to his old home: hills on which the stones yet lay loose that had been taken up to cast at him, when he left them forever" (Ruskin, "Modern Painters," iv., 374). Scripture says they were heavy with sleep butwere fully awake.(9:32) Another way of saying it is that they were in a stupor. pierce the gloom of sin and grief; Mark 9:2-8. Several times over the years, Ive prayed that I could see an angel. 17:19; Mark 9:210. The story of Elijahs going to heaven is told at 2 Kings 2:11-12. Lets make three tents: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah, not knowing what he said. Yet he suffered without ever sinning. shining to the perfect day.. But the disciples could have had no such visual associations with either Moses or Elijah. Listen to him (v. 35). They will not understand Jesus prediction of his death and resurrection (18:31-34). Like in Star Wars when Yoda appears as a ghost before Luke Skywalker. And it speaks to us what Christ did a few months later in his death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.
